On Saturday, June 5th, 2010 the Church Avenue Business Improvement District held it's annual Graffiti Clean-Up day in coordination with Flatbush Development Corporation and other local organizations. Over 35 volunteers consisting of residents, friends and community members each grabbed brushes to help cover graffiti throughout the Flatbush community.

For a few weeks before Saturday, community members together wtih BID and FDC staff identified graffiti sites in the area. Over thirty five volunteers such as Tiffany Ko and Allie Naskret from the Flatbush Community Church (pictured on the left) joined other volunteers on Church Avenue to remove 45 incidents of graffiti ranging from painting over entire garage doors to touching up blue mail boxes! Sites that were too large for volunteers have been referred to the City's Graffiti Removal Task Force and will be power-washed or painted in the coming weeks.
This was the BID's fourth consecutive year organizing a spring graffit clean up day and the second year of partnering with FDC to organize this event. The aim of this program is to engage volunteers in the Church Avenue community and help commercial strips such as Church Avenue create a better shopping experience through a graffiti free environment.
The BID would like to thank all of this year's volunteers for helping make this event such a success, especially the groups that came from CAMBA's Beacon program, Voices Seeking Change and the Flatbush Community Church. A special thank you goes out to Nathan Thompson (and his family) for rallying his neighbors to volunteer, hosting the post clean up barbecue and for sharing his magic show with participants at the barbecue. Thank you to Ditmas Park Blog for promoting the event but also to Liena Zagare and her family for joining us on Church Avenue to paint over graffiti. A special thanks also goes out to Bobby's Department Store (1616 and 1601 Church Avenue), 99 Cent City (1694 Church Avenue), Dunkin Donuts (1700 Church Avenue), S&A Fish Market (1623 Church Avenue) and Mercury Paint (4808 Farragut Rd.) for supplying materials for the event.
If you'd like to learn more about future graffiti removal efforts, please contact the BID at info@churchavenue.org.
